I then tried to set up the printer on a 2nd computer, running Mavericks. After a few minutes, the printer showed up and I was able to set it up. I then unplugged the USB cable, and went to the Printers and Scanners system preference panel. At that point (after waiting a minute for it to give up), I had to read the IP from the Canon printer and enter it by hand in the Network Tool dialog. However it hung on the last step "Searching for printers via access point.". I connected the printer to my new computer (with Yosemite) via USB and then launched the Canon IJ Network Tool.app (downloaded from the Canon web site) and it found the printer.

Then since I had reset my Canon MP620 network settings, I had to start from scratch.
